Functional Responsibilities

The Communications Senior Officer – Digital and Content (Photographer) will  report to the Communications Specialist and will be responsible for the tasks and responsibilities listed below:
Photography:

  • Provide professional photography of different projects;.
  • Write descriptive captions for photos, including quotes from people depicted in the photo coverage, to help tell a first-person narrative story.
  • Submit a broad range of photographs, including captions and relevant metadata, in line with UNOPS brand and key advocacy goals, following the terms as described in the deliverables below.

Videography:

  • Provide professional videography of different projects. The concept with a draft script should be made by the individual, with guidance from UNOPS personnel, and agreed upon before embarking on the videography production.
  • Record interviews and accompanying b-roll footage to showcase stories from projects.
  • Write scripts for short documentary videos about the process and impact of the projects.
  • Once scripts are approved by UNOPS, edit the videos making sure they are in line with UNOPS branding and technical guidelines.
  • Provide translations where necessary and English subtitles that are in accordance with professional subtitling practices.
  • Submit final high-res videos along with all other materials, including a selection of best b-roll, clean copies and subtitle files, as outlined in UNOPS Photo and Video Technical Submission guidelines

Availability and contractual arrangements

  • The interested Individual should have a presence/network in Ethiopia to perform the services under this ToR.
  • The Individual is expected to be fluent in English.
  • Any arrangements for travel (including transport), insurance coverage, and other requirements will be undertaken by the bidder, who will be responsible for any costs and expenses incurred for the work to be carried out under this ToR.
  • All materials developed will remain the copyright of UNOPS and that UNOPS will be free to adapt and modify them in the future.
Activities required to reach this output

    • Capture high-resolution photos and footage
    • Record high-quality video footage of broadcast quality, provided in raw/ editable formats, aligned to pre-planned storyboards, scripts, and identified narratives.
  • Provide shooting notes detailing basic information necessary to expand/ elaborate on stories in mixed media environments. UNOPS will provide these details,
  • Follow UN guidelines on respecting the dignity and human rights of all individuals captured on film or camera, working alongside targeted groups.
  • Provide high-quality, color-corrected footage not more than five days upon completion of the assignment.
  • Provide royalty-free song (s) to be used in the videos.
  • Provide all necessary equipment for photography and videography in order to perform the assignment.

Inputs required to perform activities
UNOPS shall provide the photographer/videographer with:

  • Photography/videography Release Form (provided at annex II for reference purposes),
  • Identified individuals, groups and locations for the filming,
  • UNOPS brandbook for guidance on acceptable fonts, colors etc
  • High resolution vector logos of national partners, UNOPS and its donor and partner organizations.
  • Communications contact person


Deliverables

Photography:

  • Image format, transmission, captioning, etc. to follow terms detailed in UNOPS Digital Format & Transmission Terms
  • key pictures covering main activities undertaken during the days of engagement ,
  • For web: 1600 pixels, 98 dpi
  • For print: Highest resolution (4000 pixels and above), 300 dpi
  • Editable files: PSD or Raw
  • Captions and other relevant information such as location and author’s name, should be embedded in the photo metadata and also provided in a separate information document

Videography:

  • Videos of UNOPS Project  in line with UNOPS branding and technical guidelines capturing the overall projects,
  • Before and after videos, interviews with beneficiaries, donors, government offices, district Administration,, training and workshop, etc.
  • Medium resolution: For direct uploading to UNOPS social media channels.
  • Full-res ‘clean’ copy: This is the video without any text, graphics, logos and music soundtrack. It should contain only the images and sound from the voice over and interviews.
  • Additional b-roll: This means a selection of the best footage taken during production This might include shots of the equipment and everyday activities being carried out.
  • Descriptive title, short description and shot list along with entire transcript of film
  • Separate .srt subtitle track in English

Location and Timelines

  • Assignment Schedules of the activities will be shared with the individual – two weeks in advance
  • UNOPS will arrange meetings with the project team and communications focal point to agree with the project team on the exact locations and the types of videos and pictures required.
  • Propose a creative treatment and script outline for the videos to the project team for approval.
  • UNOPS will obtain permission from the government office, if required.
  • UNOPS will arrange logistics allowing for additional time to prepare as required

Education/Experience/Language requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in photography, journalism, fine arts, media studies, or related field or related fields is required.
  • Secondary school education with relevant years of experience may be considered in lieu of a first-level degree.
  • A relevant combination of academic credentials and/or industry certifications and qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of university education.

Experience:

  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience is required with a Bachelor’s degree, two (2) years with a Master’s degree, six (6) years with a Technical Diploma, and eight (8) years with Secondary School completion in the areas of shooting images in difficult environments, visual storytelling, interviewing subjects, and photographic editing.
  • A minimum of three years (3) of experience in photographing conferences, workshops, and individuals is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in recording, producing, and editing videos is required.
  • Three years of experience in developmental projects and conducting interviews in the field is an asset.
  • Experience in a UN setting is an asset.

Language

  • Fluency in  reading , spoken and written in English language  is required.

Contract type, level and duration

Contract type: Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA)
Contract level: LICA/ICS -9 (Retainer)
Contract duration: One year initially, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability’
