Job Description

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency focused on promoting a better urban future. Its mission is to advance socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements and ensure adequate shelter for all.Project: Smart Cities Integration into the National Urban Policy (NUP). This project focuses on embedding smart cities principles and technologies within Egypt’s National Urban Policy framework. The aim is to strengthen urban governance, resilience, and sustainability by leveraging data, innovation, and digital transformation to improve service delivery, mobility, environmental monitoring, and citizen engagement.By developing smart cities components aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the New Urban Agenda, the project supports both local and national decision-makers in transitioning towards digital, inclusive, and evidence-based urban planning.

Duty station: Cairo, Egypt.

Duties and responsibilities

The candidate will fulfill the following duties and responsibilities:

The Senior Programme Assistant – Technical Support will contribute to the effective implementation of the Smart Cities Integration component of the NUP project. The incumbent will assist in technical research, data collection, stakeholder coordination, reporting, and project logistics.

  1. Technical and Research Support
  • Support technical assessments related to urban technologies, smart city indicators, and digital urban planning tools.
  • Assist in the review of smart city policies, standards, and international case studies relevant to the Egyptian context.
  • Compile technical documents and background information for consultations, reports, and presentations.
  1. Data Management
  • Support the collection of the urban and spatial data relevant to smart city applications.
  • Assist in creating GIS maps, digital dashboards, and databases as needed by the project team.
  • Maintain and update a repository of technical resources, studies, and contacts.
  1. Stakeholder and Meeting Support
  • Assist in organizing technical meetings, workshops, consultations, and training sessions with ministries, local governments, tech companies, and other stakeholders.

 

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

High school certificate or first level university degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Engineering, Information Technology, Geography, or a related technical discipline is required.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of relevant experience is required for candidates with a high school certificate, and at least one year of relevant experience for those holding a first-level university degree. Experience should be in areas such as urban development, GIS, data analysis, or technical project support. Previous involvement in multi-stakeholder projects is desirable, as is experience working with government agencies, private sector actors, and donor organisations.

Language:

Fluency in oral and written Arabic and English is required.

Contract type, level and duration

  1. Contract type: ICA
  2. Contract level: Local ICA Support, level 5
  3. Contract duration: 12 months (Renewable according to budget availability and performance satisfaction
